Mollie Makes cross stitch wooden banner

Regular readers will know that every month I challenge myself to make the Mollie Makes magazine cover gift. I’ve subscribed since it first came out and ~~have~~ had a drawer full of unopened kits – but no more! I’ve been making more time for grown up crafting and I love to make the kits and hopefully try something new. Issue 89 landed on my doormat earlier this week and for the first time ever, I finished the free cover gift on the day I received it.

Issue 89 of Mollie Makes included a sweet Cross Stitch Wooden Banner kit, designed by Chloe Hardisty of Cotton Clara. I loved the look of this and couldn’t wait to make it.

Included in the kit was a wooden pennant with pre-cut holes, 7m of pink cotton yarn and 1 sharp sewing needle. When stitched you would see the message Be Kind. This was a straight forward craft kit so I decided to put my own spin on it.First of all I spray painted the wooden banner with white Pinty Plus Chalk Paint. It was touch dry in 20 minutes so I was able to give it 2 coats quite quickly.

I replaced the pink thread with black as I love all things monochrome at the moment. I stitched the message and made the tassels, all with black embroidery thread. I think the project took me about 2 hours which included painting it. I’ve hung it on my peg board for everyday inspiration!
