Mollie Makes pom pom love birds kit

Regular readers will know that every month I challenge myself to make the Mollie Makes magazine cover gift. I’ve subscribed since it first came out and have had a drawer full of unopened kits – but no more! I’ve been making more time for grown up crafting and I love to make the kits and hopefully try something new.

Mollie Makes pom pom love birds kit

The pom pom love birds kit from issue 88 was designed by Christine Leech and contained a pom pom maker, pink, blue and black wool, as well as small pieces of green, yellow and peach felt.

I’ve made a few pom poms before but never really tried to make them into anything else. This little craft kit came with instructions to make 4 different things – pom pom birds, pom pom earrings, pom pom hairclips or pom pom macaron. I decided to make the pom pom birds since I saw the most amazing workshop called OMG Those PomPoms are amazing run by London Craft Club. In it you learned how to make the most amazing pom pom rabbit heads using the PomMaker. I would love to go but the price tag put me off. Anyway, my expectations were high for my Mollie Makes kit. But were they met?

Sadly not. I found the plastic pom pom maker really cheap and it kept falling apart every time I tried to wind the wool round it. This destroyed the fun of it really and I could have done with an extra hand! The instructions were pretty good though and, once I had figured out how to set up the two parts of the pom pom maker, it was easy to make a pom pom.

I used blue and pink wool to make the pom pom bird, embellishing it with two black eyes, a little felt beak and felt wings. I don’t think my little pom pom love bird will be winning any prizes but it was fun to make.
