Every month I challenge myself to make the Mollie Makes magazine cover gift. I’ve subscribed since it first came out and have had a drawer full of unopened kits – but no more! I’ve been making more time for grown up crafting and I love to make the kits and hopefully try something new.
I skipped the March issue as it contained a loom kit, the same as in issue 58 (and made here). I gave the kit to my sister so hopefully she has made something cute to hang up in her house. Issue 78 of Mollie Makes came with an Embroidery Purse Kit designed by Ben Treanor of Letter Clothing Co.
Mollie Makes Embroidery Purse Kit
The kit contained 4 pieces of fabric, a zip, thread and a needle. Instructions were inside the magazine with 3 ideas for lettering. I opted for the phrase ‘Ooh La La’ as this is something my 5 year old says far too much.
I stitched the little saying first, then started putting the pouch together.
I really struggled to follow the instructions! They just didn’t make any sense to me despite reading them over and over again. So I looked for some other tutorials on how to stitch a zipped and lined pouch.
Thankfully there were a few good tutorials and my own pouch started to come together! The zip is a little iffy as it was far too big for the fabric. The finished pouch is really small but I feel now I know the basics I might try making a larger one with some of my Liberty stash. I’m glad I persevered although I did want to tear my hair out a few times whilst making this!

What a cute and unique DIY! I want to try this out with my daughter.
I actually really like the final product there! It looks really nice, and definitely shows the quality of handmade things. I might have to try and make something like this for my wife one day. 🙂
This is great, i love the things that are available now for children to create. Such an easy way to introduce them to needlework plus it looks awesome completed 🙂
I’m sure this would be great for an older child to make but for now I enjoyed making it myself!
It’s good you’re starting to make these up. I want to buy a mini cross stitch to have a go at as they seem really popular at the moment x
Well done for sticking with it, it looks fab and better than I could manage. Jo x
This is great. I am often daunted about buying materials for a new craft project if I think it might be too hard for my crafting skills, but I love that this taught you the basics so that you can progress on to your own designs if you wish. I sometimes challenge myself to make the front cover projects on Mollie Makes, so far I have made two embroidery pictures and a floral felt wreath. I love Mollie Makes.
