Power Up! with Monopoly Gamer

POWER UP! MONOPOLY GAMER

A few weeks ago we established a new family tradition. Family traditions are really important to me and I think our Friday night game night is pretty cool. The kids look forward to it all week and for me, it’s the start of the weekend, the end of another busy week, and a great way for us to spend time together away from the tv or laptop.

My 7 year old is (already!) a huge gamer. He loves the PS4 and Nintendo Switch and if he isn’t playing computer games then he’s probably reading a book of watching YouTube for the latest tips!

He loves Monopoly so when I heard about the latest version – Monopoly Gamer from Hasbro Gaming – I was very excited to try it our for ourselves.

Power Up! with Monopoly Gamer

Monopoly Gamer is the latest instalment with a Nintendo twist, as it joins forces with beloved Nintendo video game characters. Instead of the usual Monopoly tokens, the game features Super Mario characters, each with their own special powers to use within gameplay. Play as Mario, Princess Peach, Yoshi, or Donkey Kong and finish the game by defeating Bowser at the end. It’s not just about money in this game; players earn points by buying Properties, collecting gold Coins, and beating the bosses.

So it was a bit of a shock to open up Monopoly Gamer. At first sight it doesn’t have much in common with traditional Monopoly. It has a game board, tokens and a dice. That’s about it. The children were so excited and wanted to play straight away but I read through the instructions a few times to make sure I understood it. Instead of bank notes there are coins, as well as a Power Up! die, character cards, title deed cards and Boss cards. If you’d like to find out a bit more about it then you can watch the video my 7 year old made:

I probably don’t need to tell you that we loved it! Yes, it took a couple of games to figure out what we were doing but the concept it quite simple – collect coins, buy property and battle bosses to rack up points and win!

I’m hoping that this version doesn’t replace my kids love for traditional Monopoly. Monopoly was my favourite game growing up and I love the fact my kids enjoy the game too. However they’re obviously a different generation and I could see this being their favourite version. Just in case your favourite character isn’t included you can buy more characters, each with their own Abilities. Monopoly Gamer Power Packs are available separately and my 7 year old has already spent his pocked money on this favourite Toad figure!

review of Monopoly Gamer from Hasbro

Monopoly Gamer costs £27.99, is suitable for ages 8+ (but my 5 and 7 year old had no problem with it) and is available from Argos, Amazon and all good toy shops.
