I love exploring London with my teens and wanted to share a recent adventure we had at Lift109 at Battersea Power Station. Battersea Power Station is a true London icon and has been converted to a new use, like Tate Modern. Today Battersea Power Station is a shopping destination with some great shops, places to eat and entertainment venue. We’ve visited to look round the building, as well as explore some of the public art trails which have taken place there.
Lift109 at Battersea Power Station
With two teens to keep busy we thought we would book a visit to Lift109, which is a lift inside the north-west chimney! When you ascend to the top you have a stunning 360 view across London.
We pre-booked our tickets so turned up at our allotted time and passed through security. There is a small exhibition to look at which includes information about the history of the building and how the building gave power to London, producing one fifth of London’s energy supply.
The building is such a London icon that we enjoyed learning more about its appearances in film and music videos, including Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, the Dark Knight, Superman III, The King’s Speech, Doctor Who: The Age of Steel and Top Gear: London Race amongst others.
Then it was time to watch a short film before we were shown to the first lift which took us up inside Battersea Power Station to 55m high. There was a tantalising view of the north-west chimney and a short walk to the final lift which took us up the chimney.
The final lift had huge glass panels and a glass top and came out at the top of the chimney.
There were amazing views across Battersea Power Station and across London. We could see all kinds of London landmarks, these were also helpfully shown in panels around the inside of the lift.
We were so lucky with the weather as we could see for miles. I especially enjoyed looking along the Thames towards the Shard, and across to the Royal Hospital where we had visited the Chelsea Flower Show last year.
Our time was soon up and we returned back down and were shown the exit via the gift shop. The whole experience lasted around 45 minutes. We had a great time and bought some souvenir photos as a memento.
Have you visited Lift109 at Battersea Power Station yet? Our teens loved it which is always a good sign!
