On Wednesday my husband and I decided to have a day time date. As much as we love our children we hardly ever get to do the things we wanted to do. So we headed into the West End for a bit of shopping and lunch without two children who need constant food and toilet breaks!
We’re both adult fans of Lego so wanted to visit the new Lego Store in Leicester Square. I’d been invited to view it before it opened to the public and was gutted I couldn’t make it. It was our first stop when we got off the tube.
The largest Lego Store in the World opened on November 17th. We’re so lucky to live near a Lego Store in Watford so were excited to see what the super duper new money-no-object Lego Store would feature. We weren’t disappointed! As we entered the store we saw giant models of famous London landmarks, including a Lego Big Ben, featuring a working clock face, which is illuminated at night – just like the real thing. There were Lego figures of famous Londoners too including Sherlock Holmes, a policeman and Judge.
There was a life-size London Underground train you could sit in – perfect for taking selfies! There was a famous London red telephone box, Lego London Underground map, Lego Post Box and amazing brick-built visual map of London around the walls of the staircase up to the second floor.
We were like two small children as we explored the shop! It was also great to see all the Lego ranges together and I can’t wait to take my 6 year old back so he can see the full range of the Lego Star Wars sets. There was a lovely building area too, complete with Big Ben and London Bridge built from white bricks, perfect for building your own little scenes around.
It’s a lovely store and, as it was first thing very quiet, so we could appreciate all the lovely details, such as the Lego bricks built into the walls! I can imagine it is slightly more manic at the weekend. We came away with a bag full of Lego goodies to make at home!
Whilst we were in the West End we walked over to Covent Garden to visit my favourite Orla Kiely shop. As we walked through Covent Garden we saw the amazing 700,000 brick Santa’s Workshop which has been built on the edge of the Piazza (opposite Paperchase). It is free to visit and open until 29th December. Again, this is something I can’t wait to show my children.
You can walk around the back and into Santa’s Workshop and see the elves making their Lego toys. There are lots of Lego favourites including the Millennium Falcon and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (which is top of my husband’s list). Every single thing is made from Lego bricks, except for the flame in the fireplace. The Lego Father Christmas is particularly impressive. Definitely something to look out for if you are in Covent Garden this Christmas.
We visited the LEGO store the day before it opened and fell on love with LEGO all over again. The attention to detail throughout the store is stunning
