The youngest teen is going through a phase of watching and enjoying all the shows I loved 20 years ago. We recently watched The Devil Wears Prada together before heading to the cinema to watch The Devil Wears Prada 2. We loved both the films, which is good because there seem to be lots more sequels coming out, such as Practical Magic 2 and 20 Dresses.
The Devil Wears Prada the Musical at the Dominion Theatre London
A friend recently went to see The Devil Wears Prada the Musical, and recommended it, so I booked tickets for me and the youngest teen. Who doesn’t love a trip to London? We had dinner at Five Guys and a shopping trip to the huge Primark on the corner of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, before heading to the Dominion Theatre to watch The Devil Wears Prada the Musical.
It’s been a long time since we last visited the Dominion but it’s a beautiful theatre and huge. There were some costumes on display in the foyer, as well as an oversized copy of Runway magazine you could stand in front of to be your very own cover star. We found our seats and settled down.
The show began with a technical hitch (which also happened to us when we saw Paddington the Musical last year!), so the opening of the show was repeated before continuing without any problems.
The musical score is written by Elton John and the show is based on the film and bestselling novel. Vanessa Williams is currently appearing as Miranda Priestley, but we saw standby Debbie Kurup on the night we visited. She was excellent. Andy is played by Stevie Doc, winner of ITV’s Mamma Mia! I have a Dream.
If you’re a fan of the film you’ll know that Andy scores a job at the prestigious Runway magazine, working for editor-in-chief Miranda Priestley. She sacrifices her personal life to meet Miranda’s demands, seduced by the glamorous world of fashion which she once despised.
Even though we were familiar with the film the musical was fun. The songs were great, and the ensemble had some pretty amazing and colourful costume changes. They also made use of the stalls as a walkway which was fun. We both had to do a double take when Andy transformed into her glamorous clothes, and had to check with each other that it was the same actress. I also loved Emily who has always been my favourite character in both films. Her role is slightly expanded in the musical version and she gets an interesting song to sing from her hospital bed.
Vanessa Williams will end her reign as Miranda Priestly on 19th September 2026, but I have no doubt whoever takes over will be great. That’s all.
