When I went to school back in the 1990s I remember my computer lessons being very limited. The computer room was basically a cupboard which wasn’t even big enough to take a whole class. Everything was very basic and didn’t really pique my interest. Fast forward to my Uni years and I was given an email address but I barely used a computer, except for typing up my coursework.
My experiences put me off computers and if it wasn’t for my husband, I really doubt I would be a blogger and enjoy social media so much. He loves technology and insists on having the latest technology and a super smart home. I wish I knew more about technology but I survive thanks to cool technology and a helpful husband.
Keeping kids safe online
I recently started work in a secondary school and had to sit in a Year 7 IT class. They were learning how to use Google Classroom which is used throughout the school for sharing work plans and homework. I love how integral technology is at school and know my children will have such a different experience at school and University to what I had.

Of course my children have had a great introduction to technology at home thanks to their father. They love to relax with their favourite games or watch the latest YouTuber in their free time. My 8 year old already enjoys IT lessons at school and is pretty curious about how our smart home works.
One thing we try to teach them is about safe browsing online. We’ve looked into getting our own virtual private network in the future. It’s probably a little ironic to worry about online safety considering how much of our lives I share online. However I’ve told my children how important it is that they don’t use their real names, we don’t mention their school or whereabouts we live on social media. I hear some real horror stories at work but I hope that by setting some boundaries now I can help keep my family a little safer online in the future.

Gosh, computers have evolved so much in such a short space of time and so have the kids knowledge! I remember being a teenager and being able to easily get around all the security settings that my parents had put on, but now things seem to be getting tricker and way more secure. I’m so worried about my kids getting to this stage so it’s great that there are new, better and safer ways to keep them safe online when the time comes!
