DIY salt dough dinosaur fossils

I love to craft with my son but don’t have so much time now he is at school during the week. He was sent some of Schleich’s new range of prehistoric animals to review and I thought this could be a great crafting opportunity. There are 10 mini dinosaurs in the range and he received 6. You can find out more about the range on Schleich’s website.

These mini dinosaurs are perfect for small world play, so he’s played with them in the Tuff Spot creating all kinds of dinosaur landscapes. He’s played sink or float with them at bath time, and covered them in play dough and placed them in plastic eggs. The dinosaurs are really robust and a great pocket-friendly price. Today we thought we would use them to make DIY dinosaur fossils and we had lots of fun with them.

First of all we made our own salt dough using a salt dough recipe we’ve used before:
100g salt
200g plain flour
120ml water

Place the salt and flour in a bowl and gradually add the water to form a dough.

We placed greaseproof paper on the table and my son divided the mixture into 6 equal sized balls.Schliech mini dinosaursThen he chose a dinosaur and carefully placed it in the salt dough ball, removing the dinosaur to leave its impression.

DIY dinosaur fossilsThen I microwaved them for about 5 minutes and left them to cool down. My son chose some acrylic paints and painted each dinosaur fossil.
