Last week the main party leaders were out and about canvassing for votes for the forthcoming General Election on Thursday 4th July. The outgoing Prime Minister was at the Denby Pottery Factory and tried dipping pots, the Leader of the Labour Party was at Duchess China, whilst the Liberal Democrat Leader was painting some pottery at Vale House, Marple Bridge.
Craftivism and Election Day crafts
Did you know the first General Election was held in 1802 ? There have been quite a few since then and I’ve voted in all the ones I’ve been eligible to vote in. It got me thinking about creating something to mark the General Election. I searched Pinterest and found very few crafts. There were some resources for kids but I was surprised by the lack of crafts for adults, or are they just difficult to find?
Here are some ideas for some gentle craftivism if you are looking to encourage others to vote, or wish to mark the General Election (or London Mayor elections, or local elections, or any occasion you get to exercise your democratic right to vote) :
Votes for Women painted rocks from the gingerbread house blog
VOTE Craftivism embroidery kits from Juniper Forest Embroidery
craft stick Union flag from the gingerbread house blog
Sister Suffragette embroidery hoop kit by Heidi Hummingbird Hoop on Etsy
red, white and blue VOTE embroidery design from Hands Occupied
Make your own fabric rosette based on this Mother’s Day rosette I made
Votes for Women embroidery hoop by HEMbroidery Keepsakes on Etsy
Union Jack Liberty flags from the gingerbread house (so tempted to Cricut the word VOTE over the middle of these!)
Sylvia Pankhurst embroidery hoop kit by Amy Hood Illustration on Etsy
Now I’ve started looking I’ve found some gorgeous craft kits which would be so much fun to stitch. I love the idea of stitching some of these and sharing them on my socials to remind people to get out and vote. Will you be making anything to encourage others?
