easy Summer votive craft for kids

Summer votive craft {A-Z Play at Home}

Posted on June 2, 2017October 19, 2023 by jenny

One thing the children love to do is raid the recycling box for crafting materials. Yoghurt pots seem to be a favourite but all kinds of cardboard tubes, egg boxes, cereal boxes and jam jars go in – waiting to be given a new lease of life. With Father’s Day coming up this month the children wanted to make something special for their Dad, so raided the recycling box for ’empties’ – jam jars which they turned into summer votives.

We used
baking parchment
colouring pens
empty jam jars
sticky tape
LED tealights

I roughly cut the baking parchment to fit around each glass jar then let the children colour in their own scene.

They both had their own ideas of what they wanted and it was lovely to hear them talk about what they were creating. The pens we used didn’t stick to the baking parchment very well so next time I would experiment with different pens.

Once they had finished their drawings we trimmed them to fit around the jar and stuck them in place with glue dots.

To finish them off we placed an LED tea-light inside. These will look great when we’re enjoying the garden on a summer evening and make a super sweet handmade gift for Father’s Day too.

    I love. That, it looks like something you could buy in an expensive card shop.

    A great crafty idea. Lovely for involvement with children of all ages. Got me inspired now, I have some of those glue dots (meant to be for attaching a space poster, but that failed horribly), so found a better use for them.
