With Mother’s Day coming up soon I thought I should make a head start on some handmade gifts to give the ladies in our family. A couple of weeks ago I visited the Spring Knitting & Knitting Show where I picked up some gorgeous pieces of Liberty Lawn fabric. At the time I didn’t have a project in mind but the fabrics were too good to stay hidden in my fabric cupboard. In fact they didn’t even get put away as I’ve already used them to make some sweet fabric tissue holders.
To make your own you will need:
Self healing cutting mat
Rotary cutter
2 x pieces of fabric
Sewing machine
Fabric tissue holder tutorial
Choose your fabrics. You will need two pieces of fabric, you won’t see the inner one but make sure you pick something stunning for the outside.
For my fabric tissue holder I chose a pretty pale blue piece of Liberty Lawn, as well as a contrasting polka dot off-cut from my stash.
Based on the measurements of a standard pack of tissues, I cut the two pieces so each measured 5 1/2″ by 7 3/4″ using a self-healing cutting mat and my Fiskars rotary cutter.
I gave both pieces a quick iron to remove any creases, then placed them right side facing and pinned the longer lengths together. Using my sewing machine I stitched the shorter lengths, with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Remove the pins and turn the fabric the right way. Place the fabric with the material you want to see facing you. Iron again and place the fabric with the shorter length at the top.
Fold down the top about 1 1/2″ and fold up the bottom edge about 3″ so they overlap, and pin in place. Then use your sewing machine to stitch long both the short edges with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Remove the pin and snip away any loose threads.
Turn your tissue inside out and you have finished.
This is a lovely quick sewing project so I made 4 all in different fabrics. They make a lovely handmade gift and are an easy way of making sure you can find your tissues in your handbag.
