A few weeks ago the teen and I decided to enjoy a day out in London. We love a trip to the theatre and booked tickets for The Hunger Games: On Stage. I’ve read the books and enjoyed the films, so was excited to see the story come to life on the stage.
The Hunger Games: On Stage
The Hunger Games: On Stage is located at Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre. The production is easily reached via the Elizabeth line, Jubilee line and DLR, making it an ideal choice when looking for things to do in Canary Wharf. I like the area around Canary Wharf (they have a great lights trail over winter) so we knew we could get something to eat, and do some shopping, before the performance.
Canary Wharf is easy to get to for us, so we headed out for the day. I thought we knew Canary Wharf but we actually found the theatre quite difficult to find. I would make sure you leave plenty of time to find the theatre!
The theatre has been designed specially for this stage show. It felt like a lovely modern space and was decorated with costumes from the films.
The seating is around the stage, but certain blocks of seating moved at various points during the performance! This really added to the experience. The whole space was used with action taking place on the stage but also at both ends of the stage and also in the space above and below the stage. It was a very clever use of space and kept us both entertained.
The performance is based on the book “The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins published in 2008. In a dystopian future, the Capitol maintains control over its districts through the annual Hunger Games, forcing 24 young tributes to compete in an arena as part of a televised spectacle. When Katniss Everdeen volunteers in place of her sister, she is drawn into a brutal contest where survival depends not only on skill, but on strategy, alliances and resilience.
We really enjoyed the show. We had great seats but I don’t think there was a bad seat to watch the show. The teen loved the performance, despite not having read the books or watched the films yet. Even though I knew the plot, I still enjoyed watching the performance, especially how they recreated the actual game in the arena and the use of harnesses to let the actors move around. It’s a great show and definitely recommended if you’re looking for something funs for teens to do.
