Lego Busy Box or Portable Lego Kit for travelling kids

Portable Lego Kit {Lego Busy Box}

Posted on August 30, 2016August 29, 2016 by jenny

After a few weeks at home we have finally got away for a holiday. I was really looking forward to a change of scenery and some meals out! Our preparations start early as my children love to start planning what they are going to take. Now clearly they are only talking about their toys but you would think they were planning the whole trip with the amount of discussions which take place.

My 6 year old loves his Lego, especially his Star Wars sets, so wanted to take some of this with him. The last time we agreed to Lego in the car you can probably imagine how noisy it was and how many pieces were lost. So my 6 year old and I came up with the Portable Lego Kit or Lego Busy Box which has solved all our problems.

We used:
Metal lunch tin
Lego base plate
Fret saw
Twin Stick tape
Star Wars Duck Tape

How to make a Portable Lego Kit

We used an old metal lunch tin as the base of our Portable Lego Kit. I wanted to provide two surfaces where my son could build and play with Lego whilst on the move.

Portable Lego Kit

I found a small base plate, measured the size I needed and marked it with a piece of washi tape. Then I cut the Lego base plate using a very fine fret saw.

Portable Lego Kit

The larger piece was for the bottom of the box and the smaller piece for the inside of the lid. I turned each base plate over and applied strips of Twin Stick tape to each one.

I removed the backing paper and placed each base plate where I wanted them.

DIY Portable Lego Kit

To finish off the Portable Lego Kit I added strips of Star Wars Duck Tape around the inside of the tin. Lego and tin can be quite noisy so this step was just to try and deaden the sound of any loose pieces of Lego moving around!

My son loved choosing which Lego sets to take with him and has been using his Portable Lego Kit every day. We already had all the supplies we needed so this was a nice and easy make for him.

This is an amazing idea! I always used to get my Lego all over the place so something to keep it altogether is a stroke of genius!
