Planning my dream craft space

I’ve been sorting out some of my craft supplies this morning. Everything has spilled into our spare room and as we are about to re-decorate my daughters room, she will need to move into the spare room for a week or two, I really need to tidy it up.

You may remember that one of my craft goals for this year was to organise my craft stash and books, and plan a craft space for me. Somehow my husband has ended up with the spare room as an office (even though he rarely works from home) as well as multiple sheds to store all his man stuff. Now, I don’t want to be outside, sewing in a little shed, but I have been eyeing up the option of turning his office into my craft room. It would need some work.

Planning my dream craft space

Space to work

I don’t actually need much space to work. Just a table large enough for my MacBook Air/sewing machine/cutting mat. I actually have a vintage wooden desk which would be perfect to work from. I get distracted easily and can’t help but think having a little space to work would make a huge difference.

Space to store

What I do need is storage for all my craft books, fabric and craft supplies. I have been making a conscious effort to sort through everything over the last few weeks and have donated a lot to our local charity shop. Cheap and cheerful shelves from Ikea would probably do the trick.

Accessories

I’ve been planning the smaller things too. Like a sign for my door to make the little people aware that mummy is working! I love the sign I made on signomatic.co.uk recently. They make all kinds of signs for buildings and offices, from signs, banners and vinyl texts to decals and roll-ups. It’s easy to design your own personalised signs in the material, colour and shape of your choice. Who doesn’t love a personalised sign on their office or desk? I was able to choose from their huge selection to make my wooden sign and I would love to put it on the door of my craft space one day.

wooden blog sign

I already have a beautiful wooden peg board which would be perfect as my inspiration board, and I’ve been eyeing up some gorgeous wooden organisers from Orla Kiely to keep my stationery together. I can’t wait to put my plan to my husband and see what he says.

A dedicated craft space is also on my to-do list. Right now I just move my gear to whichever room I’ll be working in. You are right that it would probably less distracting if I just had a set place for it. Hope it all goes according to plan and you’ll us updated 🙂
