Not Your Average Maths Book {review}

I’ve reviewed quite a few fiction and non-fiction books for adults recently, so I was delighted to receive a copy of Not Your Average Maths Book by Anna Weltmann to review with my children.

Not Your Average Maths Book

Can animals count? … Why is zero the most useful number? … Why are bubbles always round? … Where did maths come from?

Discover the answers to these questions and so much more in this fun and accessible book all about numbers and their history!

Not Your Average Maths Book by Anna Weltmann, illustrated by Paul Boston, published by Quarto Kids.

Not Your Average Maths Book looks at how maths is useful in our everyday lives, from its use on construction sites to how algorithms dictate what music we listen to on our smart phones. Accompanied with fun illustrated layouts and graphics to help visualise the concepts in an easy and digestible way alongside a mathematician’s hall of fame, this book sets out a short history of maths, highlighting some of the brilliant minds who have advanced our understanding of numbers.

Bringing maths to life with relatable examples drawn from everyday life, this book is the perfect extra-curricular companion to help inspire a love of numbers in the budding mathematicians among us.

Both my children have read this book. Maths is not their favourite subject although they are both good at it so far! This is a fun book for those who love maths or are interested in what maths is and where it came from. My daughter loved the puzzles, especially solving the puzzle using the Caesar Cypher.

Anna Weltman is an author and math teacher, with a passion for showing kids how math is present to the world around us. She is co-founder of Math Munch, an online resource that provides a digest of mathematics for children and parents. Her award-winning This is Not a Maths Book was published by Ivy Kids in 2015.

Paul Boston studied illustration and design at Brighton University, and is inspired by 1950s children’s books, antique maps and diagrams, 17th Century engravings, Gothic art and Japanese prints. Paul’s charming depictions of people and places have been commissioned for global advertising campaigns, publishing projects and editorial commissions.

Not Your Average Maths Book by Anna Weltmann, illustrated by Paul Boston, is published by Quarto Kids, priced £9.99.
