Food and Board Board Game Cafe

Food and Board

Over half term we made a visit to Food and Board, a Board Game Cafe in Yately. We love trying different Board Game Cafes, and find they are a fun place to entertain everyone, whilst enjoying drinks or lunch. We booked a 2 hour slot online and looked forward to trying some new games.

Food and Board have a games library of over 350 games. We usually opt for a game we know, such as Ticket to Ride or Carcassonne, but the owner recommended a game for us to try. Our only requirements were that it should be easy to learn. He chose Myabi, a multi-layered tile placement game. The Board Game cafe was quiet so the owner was able to spend time helping us set up the game. It was quick to learn and actually really fun. We loved the Japanese theme (something my 13 year old loves) and it was fun to place the tiles on our board, creating our very own Japanese style gardens.

The game took about 45 minutes to play, which we found to be the perfect length. There are expansions you can add when you have learned the game. We actually enjoyed it so much we bought it for our son and have been playing it a lot!

Whilst we ordered delicious milkshakes and food for lunch we squeezed in a quick game of Dog Bingo. This was clearly chosen by the dog-mad 11 year old. This was super simple to set up and play. She enjoyed it so much we ended up buying her a copy for Christmas too!

Our final game was Block Party. I think this appealed to the 13 year old who loves all things Minecraft. The idea was quite simple, pick a card and build it from blocks. The other people need to try and guess what it is. My kids are quite creative so this really appealed to them and we had a good giggle at each other’s pictures.

Our 2 hours went really quickly and we were glad to have discovered Food and Board and some new games to play. The only downside was that dogs were not allowed so we had to leave our pup in the car. Fortunately we were able to park outside the cafe so we could keep an eye on him. There was also a fabulous pet shop in the same parade of shops so we were able to take him and spoil him with dog treats afterwards!
