I saw a fab tutorial on the Hobbycraft blog for an Air Drying Clay Castle. We love working with play dough and salt dough but we’ve never tried air dry clay before. We were inspired to make mini gingerbread houses but you can probably tell from the title of this post that things didn’t go to plan!

We used:

Hobbycraft White Air Drying Clay 1kg
rolling pin
greaseproof paper
knife

What we did:

We rolled out the Air Drying Clay as to the instructions on the packet. We rolled it on top of a large sheet of greaseproof paper so we didn’t get the table dirty. We used a gingerbread house cutter to cut out the pieces and left them all out to dry overnight on more greaseproof paper.

When they were dry we used some more of the Air Drying Clay, mixed with a little warm water, to hold the walls together and left it to dry.

Although we followed the instructions we found it quite hard to make and the roof didn’t stay on! Instead we have what looks like an abandoned Scottish croft and it’s not really much use!

Air drying clay Easter egg decorations

As the children enjoyed working with the Air Drying Clay we got the remainder out and made some air drying clay Easter egg decorations. Again, we rolled it out on greaseproof paper and then cut out our shapes using some egg and bunny shaped cookie cutters. I made small holes in the top of each one so we could hang them and we also stamped them with letter stamps.

When they had dried the children decorated theirs with Sharpie pens and we left some blank. They’re currently hung on our little seasonal tree and are a great addition to it.
