James and the Giant Peach story stones

We love making story stones and decorating rocks. We have built up quite a stash so have been taking a few out with us every day and hiding them around the neighbourhood. It’s been so lovely to see friends finding them and posting them on our local painted rocks Facebook page. It definitely encourages us to make more.

We recently told you about the theme for the 2018 Roald Dahl Day celebrations – James and the Giant Peach. A few years ago my son and I worked our way through all of Roald Dahl’s stories. When I mentioned James and the Giant Peach he was happy to think about the story and remember all the different characters. It inspired us to make a new collection of painted rocks and story stones.

James and the Giant Peach story stones

First we made our peach using a giant polystyrene ball which my son painted.

Next we made our James and the Giant Peach story stones. We already had a supply of smooth stones so we washed them and left them to dry in the sunshine.

We looked at the original drawings in our copy of James and the Giant Peach and used these as the basis for our story stones. We drew them on in pencil and went round them with our collecting of chalk pens.

We made a story stone for James, Earthworm, Centipede, Ladybird, Old Green Grasshopper, Glow-Worm, Silkworm, Miss Spider and a small peach.

They were fun to make and we’ve been using them with the 6 year old who decided she wanted to read James and the Giant Peach too. It makes such a good bedtime story!
