The BFG's Grobswitchy Cake

The BFG’s Grobswitchy Cake

Posted on April 10, 2016July 8, 2016 by jenny

My 6 year old has been working his way through the Roald Dahl books and the latest is The BFG. As soon as we started reading it he asked what crafts we could make, so we looked through our copy of Roald Dahl’s Completely Revolting Recipes and found a recipe for The BFG’s Grobswitchy Cake.

“It is a little bit like mixing a cake’, the BFG said. ‘If you is putting the right amounts of all the different things into it, you is making the cake come out any way you want, sugary, splongy, curranty, Christmassy or grobswitchy. It is the same with dreams.'”

We measured out the ingredients and made the cake mixture.

Then we put the cake together. It’s a clever recipe where you put half the mixture in then sprinkle a layer of sugar, cinnamon, chopped pecans and grobswitches (otherwise known as amber sugar crystals) over the top. We poured in the other half of the cake mixture and sprinkled the remaining sugar, cinnamon, pecans and grobswitches on top.

This cake smelled delicious when baking and looked pretty good when it came out of the oven. The pecans and grobswitches gave it a lovely crunch and it went perfectly with custard.

This looks delicious! I love the fact that there are Roald Dahl inspired recipes that are simple enough for the kids to join in making.

This sounds absolutely lovely and I love the idea of putting nuts in a cake to mix up the texture x

Oh how fab is this? I had no idea you could make something from a Roald Dahl book – I must try this when Pickle is a bit older. Kaz x

That sounds like a great book for kids (mental note for goddaughter), I think I would have loved it when I was younger. Just to add I might have tasted quite a bit of that cake before cooking it ha ha xx
