Halloween gives us a great opportunity to enjoy the season. My kids have always loved Halloween. Every year they dress up and go to a Halloween party, they help to decorate the house for our Trick or Treaters, and love to bake spooky treats to enjoy at home on the day. We like to offer a mix of mini bags to our trick or treaters, especially when we know it’s a night where we all share and receive so many treats.

This year Haribo asked us to collaborate with them and share with you our Halloween scare. You all know how much we love to make so it won’t be a surprise that we make a lot of our own Halloween decorations. We love crafting with recycled material and with the nights drawing in (can you believe the clocks go back in the UK this weekend?) we decided to bring a bit of light into our evenings with our DIY upcycled pallet Halloween sign. This is a great way to show local Trick or Treaters that they are welcome to knock on our door!

Hammer
Galvanised round wire nails 2.65 x 50 mm
5m flexible EL wire, 2.3 mm diameter
2 * AA batteries
White round cable clips 3.5mm

DIY upcycled pallet Halloween sign

I love crafting with wooden pallets. They are easy to get hold of and it always feels good to re-use something and give it a new lease of life. The wooden pallet mud kitchen we made a few years ago is still growing strong!

Now we already had a wooden pallet but it needed a few new deckboard so I managed to get another pallet from some builders working opposite our house. We removed some of the deckboards from the newer pallet, and nailed them into the gaps on the older pallet.

They fitted perfectly and the different coloured planks looked really good and created the perfect surface for our DIY Halloween sign.

I really wanted to involve the children in this craft so I roughly measured the size of the pallet and made a paper template. I put this on the table and asked them to help design a spooky pumpkin for our upcycled pallet Halloween sign.

They both love to be creative and enjoyed drawing a huge pumpkin with triangular eyes and a big gaping mouth.

We wanted to make our sign glow in the dark as we knew most of our Trick or Treaters come after dark. We bought a length of EL wire as it’s always really fun to use. The one we bought had 3 modes: fixed, fast flashing and slow blinking and worked simply with a press of the driver button to change modes.

EL wire is safe and environmentally friendly and also waterproof, although we have our fingers crossed that Halloween will be dry. It also has the added bonus that it is flexible and can be easily bent into any shape – perfect for creating a spooky glow in the dark pumpkin.

We roughly measured the size of the pumpkin the children had designed, then started placing the EL wire on the pallet, using the cable clips to keep it in place.

It took us a few attempts to get the pumpkin the right shape, unwinding more of the EL wire to create the eyes and mouth. When we were happy with the shape we used more cable clips to keep everything in the right shape.

We’ll be placing our glow in the dark Halloween sign outside our house. It will hopefully make our Trick or Treaters smile when they come knocking next week!
