A few years ago I picked up a vintage foot stool at a car boot sale. I wanted to re-cover it with some lovely Orla Kiely fabric. I think the foot stool may have sat in the spare room for about 6 years until I recently found it again.
You know that 2018 is the year of tackling those little projects I stashed away. So this is what it looked like before I upcycled it.
There were two parts to it – the wooden base and top. The top was embroidered over a foam pad (although we didn’t know this until we took it apart).
I wanted to use some of my favourite Orla Kiely stem fabric in orange. I recently used this fabric to re-cover a vintage ottoman and thought the leftover fabric would be perfect for this little project too.
First I gave the wooden base a little makeover with two coats of Pinty Plus Chalk Paint in Piedra Stone (CK791). This was touch dry in 20 minutes so didn’t take long.
Then I started on the top. First I removed the embroidered fabric which had been held in place with drawing pins. Underneath was a rather lovely 1960s fabric which had been nailed down. I removed this one too and was left with a circular piece of wood and a round cushion pad. Unfortunately the piece of wood was split in two so I repaired this with some wood glue.
Then it was time to make a new cushion cover. I placed the fabric right side down, and placed the cushion pad with the wooden circle on top. I cut around them, leaving plenty of fabric to go around the sides of the cushion pad and underneath.
I held the fabric down, folded it flat where necessary and used a staple gun to hold it firmly in place. The underneath may not look particularly pretty but you’ll never see it so I didn’t really worry too much about how it looked.
I’m really pleased with how it turned out. One of our sofas is also orange so it goes really well in our living room. Plus the children love to sit on it whilst they’re watching the tv.
