Puff pastry Nutella heart

Puff pastry Nutella heart

You know when you see something on Pinterest and you just have to make it? Well just before Christmas I came across a puff pastry Nutella Christmas tree and knew I wanted to try it. We made it for breakfast just before Christmas and it was a bit fiddly but worth the effort. It made for a really lovely breakfast. With Valentine’s Day coming up we thought we would try a special heart version, the method is exactly the same.

There are loads of recipes and tutorials for making a puff pastry Nutella Christmas tree. They are really quite simple, if a little messy, and make a great winter breakfast. To make one you will need:

500g ready to roll puff pastry

Nutella hazelnut spread

1 egg

Icing sugar

Pre-heat your oven to 190°C. Make sure your pastry has been out of the fridge for at least 10 minutes and leave your jar of Nutella on the radiator to melt ever so slightly – this really helps when you come to spread it.

Lay your puff pastry sheet out on your worktop and cut into two equal pieces. Spread one half of the pastry with the slightly melted Nutella and place the other half of the puff pastry on top.

Carefully draw your heart shape on the pastry, making sure to cut through both layers. Be warned this can get slightly sticky. Discard the excess pastry – we twisted ours into shapes and baked them along with our Nutella heart.

With your sharp knife then score down both sides of your heart, about 3 cms into the heart from the top to the bottom. Then twist each piece once.
