This year my son started Year 2 and although he is a really good reader he doesn’t show any interest in reading chapter books on his own. We’ve been working our way through the Roald Dahl books together at bedtime but nothing seemed to hook him in enough to stay up late reading on his own.
Star Wars Reads Day
For the past few weeks I have been searching for any information on Star Wars Reads Day. Star Wars Reads Day is an international campaign to celebrate and encourage children to read. Last year we received a wonderful bundle of Star Wars books to review (including Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back Activity Book, Star Wars Doodles and Star Wars Where’s the Wookiee? which you can read about here). My son is a huge Star Wars fan, thanks in part to receiving these Star Wars books. Before then he was a Minecraft fan but since Star Wars Reads Day, and The Force Awakens coming out last December, he has only been interested in Star Wars!
Anyway, I was really looking forward to Star Wars Reads Day coming around again but I haven’t been able to find anything about it happening in the UK. This is so sad because Star Wars is such a great hook for encouraging children to read.
So I thought I would share some of our Star Wars collection of books. We recently found something which he’s whizzed through, thanks to Star Wars, and it might be useful if you have a reluctant reader too!
Star Wars books for a 6 year old (KS1/Year 2)
My son has a huge collection of Star Wars books which he loves. For his 6th birthday I bought him a box set called the DK Essential Library Star Wars Collection. The 15 books are staged so you can read them together, working towards reading independently which I thought was brilliant. They were probably slightly too easy for him but he loved them and read them again and again. It was a great introduction to Star Wars terminology.
Last week I gave him The Official Lego Star Wars 2017 Annual as a reward for taking part in a recent assembly. He’s not a natural performer but he knows we just want him to try his best. He was so happy to receive this, especially as it included Chopper and Ezra Lego figures.
We stumbled across the Star Wars Jedi Academy series (Jedi Academy, Return of the Padawan, The Phantom Bully) in our local book shop a few weeks ago. We agreed to buy the first book and see what happened. It’s not a traditional chapter book, more filled with a story and cartoons. But do you know what? It did the trick and my son finished the first book in 2 days! I quickly bought the rest in the series…
I came across the Star Wars Workbooks during the summer holidays and brought them for both my children. They really helped prevent the dreaded ‘brain drain’ which can occur over long holidays. I never needed to ask them to spend time on these books. In fact I had to keep buying more as they genuinely enjoyed them so much. They cover Writing Skills, Maths Skills, Alphabet & Phonics, Reading Skills and more.
He has lots more Star Wars books on his bookshelves. We’ve gradually been going through his books and giving his much-loved Thomas & Friends books to the charity shop. I’m sad that he’s growing up so quickly but I couldn’t be prouder of his reading skills.
I haven’t found any fun events for Star Wars Reads Day but you can still join in the fun by downloading the official Star Wars Reads Day activity pack which is full of word searches, colouring in pages, crafts and more.
