St George’s Day painted rock

This weekend we will be taking part in the annual St George’s Day Parade as both my children are members of Beaver Scouts. Did you know that St George was the Patron Saint of Scouting? I thought it would be fun to make a special St George’s Day painted rock to hide somewhere near where the parade is taking place.

Uniball kindly sent us a supply of Posca pens just in time for the Easter holidays. We took them away with us and the children enjoyed painting some rocks whilst we were away. My 8 year old has created a series of Lego Ninjago painted rocks to hide locally.

I recently bought a bag of white cobbles from the DIY store. I gave some a good wash and left them to dry. I wanted to make a series of 4 rocks – featuring the Cross of Saint Andrew, the Cross of Saint Patrick and the Cross of Saint George, along with the Union Jack. On the first I drew a union flag on to the stone in pencil, filling in the details using the Posca pens.

As the cobble stone was white I decided to only use the red and blue pen. This meant it was a super quick painted rock, as I didn’t need to leave it to dry between colours.

I also made the Cross of Saint Patrick, the Cross of Saint Andrew and the Cross of Saint George, all on the white cobblestones.

I added our local # on the back of each one and when they were dry gave them a coat of varnish. I can’t wait to take our patriotic painted rocks with us this weekend and hide them. So many people are making and hiding painted rocks that I hope we will find some too!
