Last week it was time to try the Sainsbury’s Make Your Own Gingerbread House kit with my 10 year old. My son had previously made the M&S gingerbread house kit which tasted really good, so we were looking forward to building another gingerbread house.

The Sainsbury’s Make Your Own Gingerbread House kit contained all the dry ingredients to make the gingerbread house, we just needed to supply butter and golden syrup.

The first step was making the gingerbread dough which I did whilst my daughter was at school. She never seems to like this part so it was easier for me to do it on my own.

The templates were actually printed on the inside of the box, so I cut them out and used them to cut the shapes I needed. There were two walls, two roof pieces and a door. I know they look a little wonky but I knew I would be able to trim them once they were baked. There was plenty of dough left over to make some extra tree and stars.

Once baked I carefully removed them from the oven, placing the card templates over each piece and trimming them. The gingerbread was a gorgeous colour – and smelled so good too!

I left the gingerbread to cool until my daughter came home. Then the fun could really start! The kit included the icing and a piping bag, so we mixed up the icing sugar until we had icing, placed it in the piping bag and started building!

Gingerbread houses come in all shapes and sizes and this was a fun A frame design so easy to put together. Our icing was a little too runny so my daughter needed a little help but enjoyed covering her house in icing. There was a guide on the box but she made the house her own, adding lots of silver balls, as well as some of the extra gingerbread biscuits I made.

She wanted to eat it straight away but we persuaded her to leave it a little while so the icing would harden. Gingerbread is always delicious but this one was really delicious and didn’t last long!
