Ravensburger 3D Planetary Solar System Set review

Solar System 3D puzzle

My children have always enjoyed puzzles. When they were younger they loved doing puzzles of their favourite tv characters and we’ve reviewed a fair few since we started reviewing toys and games on our blog. A few weeks ago we were offered a new type of puzzle for us – 3D! I knew my children would love the challenge so eagerly awaited the arrival of the 3D Planetary Solar System Set from Ravensburger.

A large box arrived containing a set of 8 different 3D puzzles you can build to create the Solar System in miniature. The 3D puzzles are scaled to represent the different sizes of the planets, so Saturn and Jupiter are represented as 108piece puzzles, Uranus and Neptune as 72pieces, Earth and Venus as 54piece and Mars and Mercury as 27piece puzzles, totalling 522 pieces in all.

Each puzzle has curved, high quality plastic pieces, which are numbered on the inside for easy assembly. Each “planet” comes with its own stand and the whole set can either sit on the colourful “Solar System poster (which includes facts about each of the planets), or be suspended by thread. My children wasted no time in getting started. It actually kept them quiet for most of the day – I loved watching them work together to make each planet.

This puzzle uses unique plastic pieces, which slot together to build this sturdy and strong model. I thought it might be a little difficult for my 6 year old but she loved it! I think she likes a challenge and wanted to be just like her older brother. They soon started finishing the planets, placing them on the poster as they went.

Each puzzle piece is printed with a number on the reverse side, so you can either assemble the puzzle by eye, or just by following the numbers.

The set also includes a kit which assembles into a “sun” mobile, and a fact-filled information leaflet for all budding astronomers out there!

The Ravensburger 3D Planetary Solar System Set is suitable for ages 7 years and up. Priced at £49.99. It makes a great gift for children interested in space and even better, no glue is required!
