Since my son watched The Force Awakens in December everything has been about Star Wars. Up to that moment he had been a huge Minecraft fan but now it’s all forgotten and all he seems to do is eat, sleep and talk about Star Wars.
However, we’ve had so much fun crafting around the theme of Star Wars. Luckily we’re all Star Wars fans, yes, even me!
We wanted to make something special to celebrate May 4th. My 6 year old loved the idea of a Star Wars Day so we made our very own papier mache Death Star. This has been one of those projects which has taken a while, but we finished it in time for the 4th May, so I had to blog about it.
It’s been a while since we did this kind of craft, it was actually our papier mache Clangers planet back in August last year. Following the same method we mixed the special papier-mâché paste, tore strips of newspaper and slowly added them to a balloon. The children enjoyed this stage so much as they love getting their hands messy!
We hung our papier mache balloon up to dry then gave it another layer of newspaper and glue.
When it had dried and felt sturdy, strong enough to withstand painting anyway, we popped the balloon and removed it. Then we mixed grey paint and started covering it. As you can see the whole thing has been a team effort!
It needed two coats of paint to cover up the newspaper print. Then we added on some details such as a small paper plate for the superlaser emitter, and drew lines around the circumference to represent the docking stations.
