Paper plate fan to celebrate Chinese New Year

I know we haven’t even had Christmas yet but my thoughts have been turning to 2018 and all the lovely things we will be making next year. Did you know that in 2018 Chinese New Year falls on February 16th? In Chinese astrology, each year is related to a Chinese zodiac animal according to the 12-year cycle, and 2018 will be the Year of the Dog.

My children love learning about different cultures so I thought it would be fun to make something at home. We have tried a lot of crafts to celebrate Chinese New Year. This year we made paper plate fans.

For our paper plate fan to celebrate Chinese New Year we used paper plates, Bostik White Glu and Bostik Foam Pads and Glu Dots, assortment for red card, red feathers, red craft sticks and red sequins.

How to make a paper plate fan to celebrate Chinese New Year

First we cut our paper plate into two equal parts. We wanted to decorate both sides and stick them together to make our paper plate fan.

My 6 year old cut the red paper into small pieces and stuck them to each half of the paper plate using the Bostik White Glu.

Then she decorated them with red feathers and sequins using the Bostik Glu Dots. Red is a lucky colour in Chinese culture. To finish our paper plate fan we added two red craft sticks, and stuck them to the back of one of the paper plates using Bostik Foam Pads. Then we placed the other paper plate on the back of the paper plate, holding it in place with more of the Foam Pads.
