Now our garden is in full bloom it’s been fun to use some of the flowers in our crafting. Every week we have been joining in with the A-Z Play at Home blog hop. This weeks letter was the letter I which immediately made me think of ice. The children love making ice, using ice and playing with ice.
We wanted to give our ice play a little seasonal twist so picked some fresh blooms from our garden for some colourful ice play.
We used:
heart shaped plastic trays from the recycling bin
fresh flowers from the garden
water
Frozen flowers play
I encouraged the children to go out to the garden and pick as many different flowers as they could find. They cut the flowers from their stalks and placed them in plastic containers found in the recycling bin.
They covered the flowers in water and we talked about what might happen when we put them in the freezer.
We left them overnight before taking them out of the freezer to see what had happened as they melted. The children were amazed how the water had expanded – thankfully they hadn’t over filled the tubs with water.
They took their tubs outside so we could watch what happened. Unfortunately the weather was actually quite cold so the ice took ages to melt. They poked them and dropped them and left them to melt in a bowl. They complained when I asked them to hold them up whilst I took a photograph as they were cold!
Playing with ice is always fun. I can’t wait to do this again when the sun comes out!

How interesting. It’s a fun thing for kids to do but it’s educational at the same time.
What a lovely activity to teach kids science at the same time. They also look very pretty.
This looks like such a good idea for playtime x
This is such a lovely idea. The hearts look so pretty too! I love the heart trays!
We love ice play! My son likes me to freeze grapes into big blocks of ice so that he can “rescue” them!
What a unique idea, it sounds like so much fun! xo
This is a great idea, such an easy thing to do. Will remember this one for my little boy x
