Crafts to celebrate the Chelsea Flower Show from the gingerbread house

Crafts to celebrate the RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Posted on May 16, 2020 by jenny

I’ve always wanted to visit the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It takes place every year in May at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. It opened in 1862 and has been a fixture of the gardening world every year, except during the First and Second World Wars. As mass gatherings are currently banned the 2020 RHS Chelsea Flower Show has been cancelled and a version of it has gone online instead, RHS Virtual Chelsea Gardens.

Although we’re hopeless at growing anything, we love flowers. Flowers have inspired our crafting so many times from making sun catchers from petals, to using flower to paint with. If you’re inspired by the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, you’ll love our round up 10 crafts to celebrate our love of flowers.

10 crafts to celebrate the RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Frozen flowers play

We wanted to give our ice play a little seasonal twist so picked some fresh blooms from our garden for some colourful ice play.

Kid-friendly lavender wands

To make our own kid-friendly version of lavender wands we gathered a few colourful leaves along with our lavender stems. We grabbed about 10 stems and gently wrapped them inside the leaves and tied them with thread.

Egg carton bouquet

We had plenty of egg cartons in our recycling box so tried our hand at making egg carton flowers.

Painting with flowers

It’s lovely to see the garden bursting with colour and we decided to pick some flowers and try painting with them. The children were excited about painting with something other than a sponge or paint brush.

Painting with recycled cardboard flowers

Anything using cardboard rolls is generally a success as we have a ready supply of them, so we did some painting with recycled cardboard flowers.

Printing flowers with a bottle

There were lots of bottles of all shapes and sizes and I knew they would be perfect for printing our own flowers.

Free Sunflower Life Cycle Colouring book

Growing sunflowers is something that anyone can do. They are easy to start off of a sunny windowsill and then plant outside when they are strong enough or there are no more frosty mornings. Use this sunflower life cycle colouring book to see how the seeds grow into beautiful plants.

Origami poppy wreath

My 9 year old loves origami so I wanted to use all the paper flowers he’s been making and create an origami poppy wreath.

Lavender play dough recipe

I thought a batch of homemade lavender play dough was just the thing for a lovely sensory experience. Lavender has some great properties and is well known for aiding sleep.

Spring blossom sun catchers for kids

These pretty spring blossom sun catchers use blossom from all the spring blooms, perfect for some after school crafting.

great craft ideas!! they are all so cute and look like fun. one I did as a kiddo was creating “magic potions” that dyed flowers. we used Queen Anne’s Lace and stuck it in water that had food colouring in it and then watched the flower transform into new shades. was fun and a bit sciency too haha
