Over half term we stopped off to visit Lacock Abbey and use our National Trust membership cards (which saves us a fortune on days out). Looking back at my blog archives and I can see I wrote a post back in 2013 entitled Family fun at Lacock Abbey. The children were so small on our last visit and couldn’t remember that we had been before. We were excited to bring them back to Lacock for another visit. Lacock Abbey with teens Lacock Abbey is a beautiful property in Wiltshire and a lovely place to visit. As we visited over February…

We love exploring and on a recent road trip we stopped off at Woodhenge for a picnic and a little geocaching. We’ve been to Woodhenge before and it’s well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Exploring Woodhenge with kids I don’t think it will surprise you that Woodhenge is very close to its more famous neighbour, Stonehenge. Whereas Stonehenge is an amazing prehistoric stone monument, Woodhenge is slightly different. The scale is smaller and today concrete pillars mark where the wooden posts once were. Built at around the same time as Stonehenge, this was a timber monument with…

Half term just isn’t half term without a visit to family in Wiltshire. We’re really lucky that my mum lives in a sweet little Wiltshire village, close to the border with Somerset, and within easy access to some lovely family-friendly days out. If you’re looking for days out with the kids around Bradford-on-Avon then here are 9 places to visit around Bradford-on-Avon with kids. 9 places to visit around Bradford-on-Avon with kids Bradford on Avon Tithe Barn This is a spectacular 14th century monastic stone barn, 51 metres long, with an amazing timber cruck roof. Every time we travel down to visit my mum in Wiltshire we try and stop off around Avebury. It’s a beautiful part of Wiltshire with so much history to explore. We usually stop off for a picnic around Silbury Hill. It’s almost exactly half way in our journey and an amazing landmark for the children to look out for. You can see it for miles around and the children know it’s time to stop for lunch and we’re well into our journey. On our last visit we had our niece with us too. We parked up at The Seven Barrows…

We’ve been National Trust members on and off for years now. Writing that makes me feel really old! I love history and so it made sense to join an organisation looking after historic buildings and landscapes which also offered great days out for the family. Whilst staying in Wiltshire last week we realised that quite a lot of the local historic properties were managed by English Heritage so joined up. To make use of our membership we decided to stop off on our way to the Isle of Wight and visit Old Sarum. We knew they were hosting some special…

Over the last few months we’ve been exploring the area around Avebury in Wiltshire. I love ancient sites and I’m trying to encourage my children to see the beauty and significance of the Avebury World Heritage Site too. TheWest Kennet Long Barrow is one of the largest, impressive and accessible Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain. Built in around 3650 BC, it was used for a short time as a burial chamber, with nearly 50 people being buried here before the chambers were blocked. It is now part of the Avebury World Heritage Site. The walk to West Kennet Long Barrow…

I can’t quite believe it’s half term next week. The last few weeks have flown by and I haven’t written half the posts I wanted to about our Easter holiday adventures! We’re off to Wiltshire for a few days over half term. On our last visit we were lucky to visit Great Chalfield Manor and Gardens, a charming 15th-century manor house with Arts and Crafts garden, near Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire. Entrance to the manor is by guided tour only. Unfortunately we were unable to get tickets for the house so had to be satisfied with the gardens. Fortunately they…

Just to prove that we don’t sit indoors and spend all our time crafting a few weeks ago we spent the morning at Barton Farm Country Park near the pretty town of Bradford-on-Avon. Every time we visit we find something new and this time was no exception. When we arrived we headed straight for the ancient tithe barn. The weather was threatening to rain and we knew we could hide away inside if necessary. It’s a spectacular 14th century monastic stone barn, 51 metres long, with an amazing timber cruck roof. The tithe barn is part of a complex of…

Avebury is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the pretty village of Avebury in Wiltshire. It also happens to be between my Mum’s house and ours so we often stop off on the way home. Exploring Avebury Stone Circle with children is a great day out as there is so much to see and do so I thought I would tell you about our latest trip. Exploring Avebury Stone Circle with children Avebury comprises of a large henge (a bank and a ditch) with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles inside the…
