    Hidden treasures

I thought I would share a secret treasure trove we found in our own house. Our lovely terrace house was built in 1912. The layout is completely original except for the loft conversion. We recently renovated the void under the stairs to give us some much needed storage. When the builder was pulling off the old tongue and groove wooden boards he uncovered a time capsule of ancient household items which had been boarded up and forgotten. The contents were seemingly quite random. The largest item was an old tin trunk but there were also picture frames, food tins and…

    Our house

This week Ella asked why we live where we do and I thought it would be fun to write a bit about our home. We currently live in an Edwardian terrace in north London. The first flat we bought was a lovely 2 bedroom in Dartmouth Park but it was a terrible house conversion and too noisy. We lived there for 2 years before we knew we wanted our own front door and outside space. We wanted to stay on the tube network as before Edward we used to enjoy going out after work. Composting

Today we are feeling very proud of ourselves. We have ordered our first compost bin to recycle all our kitchen waste from here. Apparently it takes 6-12 months to turn into something good enough to actually use…. I’ll have to make sure I don’t get bored trudging to the bottom of the garden with my vegetable peelings and egg shells! Robin finally put the washing line up so at last we can hang the washing out. This is a good thing and was one of the reasons we wanted a house with a garden.

    Corner of my home

My mum!, originally uploaded by Jennifer Young. Spent the last few days with my lovely mum. We made a huge curtain for the lounge – we used 16 metres of a beautiful rich red fabric we bought at John Lewis. The lounge looks great, lots of reds – in the rug, fireplace tiles and other bits and pieces.

    One month on

We have now been in our new house a whole month. We under-estimated just how many trips we’d make to B&Q and the list of jobs done is keeping up with the list of things to be done. The back door has been replaced, the bath re-sealed, exterior lights fitted at the front and back, the garden fence replaced and half a tree cut down. We have paid for the pleasure of visits from the boiler man, shower man and gardener. The boiler was condemned, the shower was basically condemned, and the gardener pissed behind the shed when he thought…
