DIY Scientist Dress-up Day lab coat

DIY Scientist Dress-up Day lab coat

Posted on June 3, 2018 by jenny

Have you ever heard of Scientist Dress-up Day? Goodness knows how anyone comes up with these days but the school newsletter gave us at least a weeks warning of the latest dress up day at school. Yes, Scientist Dress-up Day is now a thing.

What is Scientist Dress-up Day?

Friday 8th June is Scientist Dress-up Day. On Friday children can go to school wearing a ‘lab coat’ decorated with words and pictures linked to science. With two children at school we seem to have a lot of strange requests, but this is one of the craziest.

My son recently got black pen over one of his school shirts which refused to wash out. I decided to use this as a basis for a scientists’ ‘lab coat’ and a pack of fabric pens to design our own Scientist Dress-up Day lab coat.

I sat down with my 6 year old and we had a chat about what she wanted on her shirt. We decided to sketch out our design on a piece of paper. My daughter wanted a name badge as well as pens, a magnifying glass, test tubes, and safety goggles.

We used the black fabric pen to add our designs to the white shirt. Then coloured them in. It felt a little strange drawing on a school shirt, definitely not something I’ve done since I left Sixth Form a long time ago.

I think my daughter enjoyed this activity too. The fabric pens were lovely and colourful so she had fun colouring in our drawings.

Can you tell what everything is? Her pocket has pens and a ruler, along with her name badge. We added two more pockets, one with safety goggles and the other with test tubes. Other science symbols include rubber gloves, a lightbulb, lightning, a magnifying glass and a warning symbol.

Now she’s already for Scientist Dress-up Day with her homemade lab coat. She has to wear it over her school uniform and I can’t wait to hear how they will be celebrating at school!

As a scientist myself I think this is a fantastic idea! What a great design too! I hope they enjoy their day 🙂

What a fab idea to go to school dressed up as a scientist! Although they should have given you more notice. Looks like its such a fab what you did and so creative as well.
