Do you know I first celebrated Thanksgiving in 1995? When I was at University at St Andrews I lived in Halls with lots of International students and was invited to celebrate Thanksgiving with them. We had an amazing meal that evening! Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States, and this year Thanksgiving occurs on Thursday, 22nd November. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and…

A few weeks ago I heard that a Yayoi Kusama installation was coming to London and I immediately booked tickets. I am so glad I did because they quickly sold out. I booked for a day during half term and this was our only planned day out in London. Yayoi Kusama: THE MOVING MOMENT WHEN I WENT TO THE UNIVERSE The Yayoi Kusama installation is a free event at the Victoria Miro gallery near Old Street. Arriving at our allotted time, we showed our tickets and were allowed inside the gallery. Handed another ticket, we were then ushered upstairs to queue…

Photo by Paweł Czerwiński on Unsplash Sending ton after ton of rubbish to landfill for decades or even centuries before it biodegrades is a bad idea from any perspective. Fortunately, in recent years, we have got a little wiser with our waste. Recycling is on the up, but that doesn’t just mean putting your cans and paper in the right coloured container. Here are some unusual ways that those with some imagination can recycle their rubbish – by turning it into art. The art of trash It’s not unusual for great (or at least expensive) works of art to be rubbish. But you do…

With two creative children I need a constant stream of ideas to keep them occupied. Having exhausted our crafting cupboard and my patience I was so thankful when a copy of 10 Step Drawing: Animals landed on our doormat over half term. Both my children love to draw and have endless notebooks full of their scribbles. It was time to take their drawing to the next level and 10 Step Drawing: Animals has been a great introduction for us all. The books aims to help you learn to draw 75 different creatures in an illustrated style, in 10 simple visual steps. 10…

I’ve been on a bit of a roll the last few days. Not only did I finish a 3D Spooky House papercut but I also made a kit I treated myself to at the Knitting and Stitching Show earlier this month. I’ve always wanted to try needle felting and I’ve bought a few kits over the years. I have to admit to not really getting much further than opening them and putting them away again! I’m always so scared to try new things, I’m not really sure why. However, this year I’m challenging myself to try new things so I…

You all know I love papercutting but don’t get nearly enough time to do it. Obviously the kids are on half term this week but I am too! Since I now work in a school I have been looking forward to some ‘me’ time (laughable I know!) this half term. Today I finally got it. We had a ridiculously early start to drop my car at the garage at 8, followed by a trip to the dentist at 9. This meant we were back at home and ready to relax mid-morning. We still had a list of jobs to do…

I have a delicious recipe to share with you today. I don’t know about you but I love watching films at this time of year. With half term next week we have a few films to watch, so we needed something special to enjoy whilst watching it. We all love popcorn but it’s even better with a seasonal twist. Today I wanted to share our Caramel Corn Snack Mix recipe. Easy Caramel Corn Snack Mix ingredients: 10 cups popped popcorn 1 cup light brown sugar ½ cup butter 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp baking soda 1 cup mellowcreme autumn mix ½…

I have been looking forward to today for weeks as I had planned to visit the Knitting & Stitching Show with a friend. We had a busy day out yesterday but I was just about ready to go when she arrived to pick me up. I love the Knitting & Stitching Show and try to go every year (see links to previous years below). Now I am back at work I was looking forward to spending some hard earned cash! Hiding from the rain at the Knitting & Stitching Show I woke up to rain and it hasn’t really stopped all…
