Every year we try and take the children to a Bonfire Night celebration. Bonfire Night is an important event in British history and I want my children to understand the meaning behind events such as this. I always think that crafting and making reinforces the things we are talking about at home which is why we crafted our own paper bonfire!
We used:
Cardboard tubes
Brown tissue paper
Bostik White Glu
Paper plate + black paint
Orange and yellow tissue paper
How to make a Bonfire Night craft with kids
First we painted a paper plate with black paint. This was for the base of our Bonfire Night craft. We set it aside to dry and started preparing our ‘logs’. The children took some cardboard tubes and roughly measured how much tissue paper they would need to roll around each one. Then they cut the paper.
They applied a think layer of Bostik White Glu along the short edge of the paper and rolled it around the cardboard tube.
When the tube was all wrapped up they added another line of White Glu to seal the end.
When the glue had dried we were able to tuck any loose ends of paper inside the tubes. At this stage my son decided to draw some lines along the tubes to make them look more like wooden logs.
Then we started to assemble our little bonfire. We placed the logs on top of the paper plate and had fun scrunching coloured tissue paper to make the flames. The flames didn’t stand up too well so we glued them to a piece of card, orange on one side and yellow on the other, and placed it between the logs.

I think crafting a great way to educate children – it makes learning much more fun. And I think it such a shame that the home-grown tradition of Bonfire Night continues to lose out to the American import, Halloween!
