Safer Internet Day with NETGEAR (and giveaway)

It’s Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 7 February. This is organised by Insafe each year in February to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people across the world. More information can be found at:http://www.saferinternet.org/web/guest/safer-internet-day

NETGEAR urges people to remember that in our increasingly “connected” homes, parental control should encompass all devices that are internet-enabled. Rob Wells at NETGEAR outlines the five golden rules so we can ensure we can protect our families in the connected home:

1. If it’s connected to your home network – it’s connected to the internet, and needs to be protected by parental control software.  This includes computers (PCs and WiFi-connected laptops and tablets as well as WiFi-enabled smartphones.)

2. Think about all the internet-enabled devices you could have overlooked. Online games and entertainment are areas of growing risk to young people and mobile devices such as an iPod Touch should be protected by parental control software too.

3. Set parental controls sensibly and flexibly.  Where possible opt for controls that can be set remotely, that can be personalised (for example in terms of access times or for each user) and that can be easily updated or amended.

4. Ensure your parental control protection covers ‘guest’ devices too – so that computers or consoles brought into your home are immediately protected as well.

5. Listen and talk to your children.  Ensure they understand how to use – and enjoy! – the internet safely, and try to agree the parental controls together.

Giveaway

To mark Safer Internet Day, NETGEAR is giving away its ultimate home router, complete with parental control software, to one lucky reader.

NETGEAR’s latest high-speed wireless router (the NETGEAR DGND3700) enables your family to access the internet and surf their favourite sites easily and quickly, with no need for messy cables. In-built dual-band technology means you have two completely separate networks – so while you are streaming the latest episode of Eastenders, your kids can be playing their favourite game online with no negative impact on the internet connection. Annoying buffering and sites loading painfully slowly will be a thing of the past.

NETGEAR Genie is included with the router providing live parental controls. This allows you to set restrictions on the type of websites your children can access. It also allows you to set time parameters on when certain content is restricted from, providing you peace of mind that your children stay safe when browsing the Internet.

  8. We have recently moved house and our router was rigged up with a woop of elation as it worked without having an engineer out from BT! That was until we ran a line speed test and it was crawling at snails pace. As were still unpacking were yet to dig out the older router to see if its an equipment problem, but I fear it is the crummy line as the sockets look awful and there are two, one with wires hanging out and the other half painted over and welded shut! Theres also no power supply by the phone point meaning for now we have an extention plug draping the hall! *cries* – anyway enough of my woe! Id love to win so when were all fixed by BT we would have a shiney new router with parental controls to keep tabs on the children and look fabulous in the hallway!
