1940s House at IWM London (and a vintage inspired giveaway!)

One of my favourite museums in London is the Imperial War Museum and we’ll be popping along between Christmas and New Year for a last look round the 1940s house which is due to close on the 2nd January 2012.

The house, which is at the heart of the well-loved family exhibition The Children’s War, is all dressed up for a traditional Christmas in 1945 and this is the last chance to see it before the exhibition closes on 2 January 2012. Snow has fallen overnight on the house, and inside, preparations for Christmas are being made and the scene is warm and inviting. See the festive food waiting in the kitchen and look around the cosy sitting room that has been bedecked with original garlands and baubles.

To celebrate this wonderful exhibition I have a mini vintage-inspired food hamper to giveaway to one reader of the gingerbread house.

  3. Has to be the plum jam. Brings back so many memories of mum making her own jams and selling them at the WI.

  4. The jar of vintage sweets – would be my favourite item in the mini hamper: always traditional at Christmas!

    Not an easy question, I have googled without any success, so hope my guess is correct.

  10. The Walkers Toffee… Yum!! I used to eat this as a child, it helped to pull loose milk teeth out ! LOL

  13. Plum jam! I do enjoy a nice piece of buttered toast with a slathering of jam, there’s something so cosy about it!

  19. Has to be the plum jam, I’ve tasted homemade and it has a lovely tang other jams just don’t have.

  22. my favourite item is the Walkers Toffee. I haven’t had toffee for years but I used to love bashing my slab of toffee to pieces with the little hammer they used to enclse in the pack 🙂 @piperanddaisy

  23. The plum jam, when I was little we lived in a house that had an old Victoria plum tree in the garden The plums were delicious and made lovely jam.

  24. The Ration Tea Tin – a reminder of the hard times our predecessors experienced.

  25. My favourite has to the the Walker’s toffee without a doubt, growing up I always remember my mother at Christmas time buying toffee in trays and you had to break it with the little hammer provided, I am now a big fan of toffee 🙂
