Painted rock Easter eggs

Posted on April 11, 2019April 11, 2019 by jenny

I think everyone knows how much we love making and hiding painted rocks. We are part of a lovely ‘rocking’ community and always find as many painted rocks as we hide. We usually take a few away with us wherever we go and love finding them too. It’s been a while since we shared any of our painted rocks here, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy behind the scenes making them. today I want to share a fun Easter craft for kids – painted rock Easter eggs.

Painted rock Easter eggs

We’ve experimented with all kinds of materials to decorate our Easter eggs over the last few years. We’ve decorated our eggs with washi tape, covered eggs with Duck Tape and even decorated them with temporary tattoos. We all love celebrating Easter and our decorations have been up for a while!

This year we’ve added something a little different to our decorating – painted rock Easter eggs.

Supplies

Bag of smooth pebbles or rocks (we like these – Amazon affiliate link)

8 pack of Uni Posca paint pens with Ultra fine 1mm nib (we like these – Amazon affiliate link)

White spray paint

Spray varnish to seal the painted rocks (we use this– Amazon affiliate link)

How to create painted rocks Easter eggs

First I chose three egg shaped rocks, washed them in warm soapy water and left them to dry outside in the sunshine.

Then I spray painted them with white paint as this gives a really good surface to paint on.

I gave them a couple of coats to make sure they were evenly covered. Then I set myself up with my favourite Posca pens.

I wanted to make painted rocks which looked like Easter eggs so drew a variety of designs, some patterned and one with a little Easter chick in a broken shell. Mine are quite tame compared to the ones my children decorated which had *lots* of colour!

I added our local # on the back of each one, then gave them a couple of coats of spray varnish to seal them. These have already been hidden around our favourite spot by the library. Hopefully they will be found soon!

I find lots of painted stones in our local woods where I think local kids leave them to be found. I love the idea of Easter versions!
