My lovely little boy is going to be 8 next week. 8! I can’t quite believe that my lovely little baby is growing up so quickly. Thankfully he still loves to craft just as much as I do and we have plenty of laughs together. He recently discovered The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books which have been great for him. You may remember he was a bit of reluctant reader until he discovered Star Wars books.
I didn’t think his Star Wars obsession would ever end but I think The Last Jedi might just have ended it for him. Fortunately he rediscovered Minecraft and has been a little obsessive about that lately. He also discovered Jeff Kinney and the Diary of A Wimpy Kid series, and Dave Pilkey and the Captain Underpants books. I love that he’s reading so much, I just wish I could afford to buy him all the books he wants!
I can’t believe I need to tear him away from reading but I thought it would be fun to combine his love of reading the Wimpy Kid books with an after school activity. We combined his favourite characters with his love of painted rocks to make Diary of a Wimpy Kid painted rocks!
Diary of a Wimpy Kid painted rocks
My 7 year old is all about creating series of painted rocks at the moment. We keep discovering series of rocks near where we live and he wanted to create his own.
He has been devouring the Wimpy Kids books and loves Greg and Rowley. He painted three rocks using my favourite chalk pens. I just love his designs!
When he had finished I gave them a quick spray of varnish to seal his creations and we wrote the local hashtag on the back of each one.
I can’t wait to go and hide them with him this weekend!

Your son has a lot in common with mine (also 8) – he’s moved away from Star Wars and on to Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid too – also loves Barry Loser. I just happy to see him reading. Those rocks are a lovely idea for a crafting session.
My son has changed a lot since he started Year 3 but he loves reading, which I am happy about. We’re reading a Barry Loser book together at the moment! I’m just holding on to these moments as I know he’s not going to want to read with me for much longer 🙁
