My Shipping Forecast Quilt update

My Shipping Forecast Quilt {update 1}

Posted on January 26, 2018 by jenny

It has been an embarrassingly long time since I wrote an update about the Shipping Forecast Quilt I have been stitching. In fact the one and only update I have posted was back in May 2015! I am a little red-faced right now. As part of 2018 and my Year of Craft I am trying to finish my WIP’s and this is my biggest one.

So I eventually located my project bag and had time to look at it. I hadn’t really made as much progress as I thought I had.

My Shipping Forecast Quilt update

This quilt is based on Janet Clare’s Good Old Blighty Quilt from her book Hearty Good Wishes. I’m pleased to report I have a pattern printed to the right size, fabric for the front, a map of the UK all bondaweb-ed and ready to go, and half of the backing piece. I think I stopped as I messed up the measurements of the backing piece. Yes, I give up far too easily.

My Shipping Forecast Quilt update

I wanted to make a patchwork backing piece using some of my favourite fabrics, including the Hearty Good Wishes fabric line Janet Clare designed for Moda. I also have some fun customisable fabrics from Zazzle which features our surname. I think I have a few more fabrics hiding in my fabric stash which I need to find.

I’m going to break down my steps, so hopefully it won’t feel like too much work, and a bit more manageable:

1 complete the backing piece by cutting out more fabric squares and sewing them together

2 iron on the applique map to the front fabric and hand stitch in place, add the applique boats, gulls and fish

3 mark out the lines of the shipping forecast areas and stitch these along with the names of the areas

4 add the wadding and backing fabric and quilt where necessary

5 make binding and stitch in place

I’m not in a rush to finish this piece, although by the end of 2018 would be good! I had hopes to give it to my husband for his birthday but I think that might just add a level of pressure which wouldn’t help. My Year of Craft is supposed to be fun, and I don’t want to stop enjoying the creative process. I hope to write another update soon!

    this looks scary! I have the book and fabrics myself, but have gone no further. I would like to make the quilt a little smaller, to be a wallhanging, so work on the map is required. Do I detect a more accurately drawn land outline?

      I don’t know why I can’t just get this quilt done but it’s one of those WIP that gets ignored! I based mine on the pattern on page 26 of the book and just re-sized it. Good luck with yours!
