The weather has been a real mixed bag this week. There have been some moments when it felt like summer, but mostly it has felt really autumnal. On one lovely and sunny afternoon I set up the tuff spot with an invitation to play – a tuff spot mud kitchen.
We have a much-loved homemade mud kitchen. It is well used but I thought that setting up a mud kitchen in the tuff spot would inspire my children to do things differently.
Whilst they were out at camp I set up the tuff spot, filling it with baking trays, colanders, spoons, containers, measuring spoons and disposable cups. I added a washing up bowl of water, as well as other bowls containing sand, small stones and soil.
My kids were pretty excited when I told them to go and look outside. It was a hot day so they were happy to sit in the shade ‘making’ food for me. They were allowed to use the hose too and had soon mixed up a load of mud to play with!
My daughter kept presenting me with coffee and soup which I had to drink! They kept wanting to add more and more things so I dig through the cupboards to find any out of date lentils or pasta for their cooking. They even added some of our herbs.
They eventually got so messy that we had to hose them down, but that’s the beauty of playing outside in the summer – anything goes!
Have you ever used a tuff spot for some mud kitchen play?

July 28, 2017 at 12:00 pmI haven’t seen these before but I do think they are fantastic for kids. I would’ve enjoyed playing with it when I was younger too.

July 30, 2017 at 6:39 pmWe love our mud kitchen, but have never thought about using the tuff spot for muddy play instead. We’ll have to give it a try this week (if it ever stops raining).
