Keeping cool in Summer

It looks like we’re having another mini heatwave in the UK at the moment. Like most Brits I admit to being obsessed with the weather. I love Spring and Autumn, find Winter a little depressing and really dislike Summer. I just can’t stand the heat and sunshine. My skin just reacts in the worst way and I find it so much easier to stay indoors than have to worry about hats, suncream and keeping cool.

I find it harder to make sure my children are being sensible too. The morning school run seems to become a blur of water bottles, hats and suncream. I hear myself constantly nagging them to play in the shade but I know they don’t because they have little sun tans on their necks!

We live in a modern house and it is so difficult to keep it cool in summer. We have shutters and blinds which we keep shut but they never seem to keep the rooms much cooler. I feel so sorry for my children who find it really difficult to sleep in this weather. In fact they were both up until after 9 last night!

At times like this I miss our old house so much. Our bedroom was in the converted loft and we had gorgeous Velux windows which let in the most amazing breeze. I can’t believe that after 4 years in our new house I miss the old one so much, but I really do. Although we lived in an old terrace our loft room felt really contemporary. The windows had built in blinds which kept the room so cool. I did find myself looking at the roofblinds online shop to see if we could re-create what we had in our house, but I don’t think we can.

I’d love to hear if you have any tips for keeping cool in the Summer and sleeping at night. So far we’ve kept the blinds shut but windows open, and left a fan on to help circulate the air, but this doesn’t seem to do enough.

I always have the fan on . I find it keeps the room cool and it really helps me when i’m overheated.

I feel like I’m a typical Brit in the summer. I complain when it’s not warm, but I always get super grumpy if I get too hot when the weather decides to heat up! I always keep a window open, a fan on and wear very, very light clothing (such as vests, skirts, thin trousers etc). I also keep a bottle of water near me at all times!

I used the fan for a bit but found it made us get a cough so I’m now keeping my curtains shut to try and keep it cooler x

My house is at the end of an enclosed street surrounded by other houses and a wall on one side so I’m lucky in the sense it doesn’t over heat in the summer but I alway use fans and black out blinds help to keep rooms cool especially if you keep the shut during the day. X

We’re also having a very hot week here in New York. I don’t actually mind it so much (prefer it to NY winter any day), but it’s a constant struggle to keep my kids hydrated and out of the sun.

I hate when it gets too hot, I can’t sleep or eat some days and my skin reacts badly to it. I use a air cooling fan at night to try help keeping me cool but if the air itself is too warm then it’s not that good. I did find some helpful tips on this website though and I use a gel bead eyemask that I put in the freezer before bed really helps and I’m also looking into the rest. Little change but works.
