Top tips for saving money during the summer holidays

Top tips for saving money during the summer holidays

Posted on May 11, 2017October 20, 2024 by jenny

As much as I am enjoying May my thoughts are beginning to turn to the summer holidays. With two children in school full-time our holidays are really precious. We don’t go on huge holidays, preferring to spend a few days with grandparents in different parts of the country, and plan lots of day trips too.

The downside to those wonderful 6 weeks of holidays is the cost of it all. With only one of us, working money can be tight, so I’ve been looking for ways to save money for the summer holidays.

1 You probably all know I do some freelance work on my blog. This all goes in a pot to make the summer holidays easier. I hate asking my husband for money and I love treating my kids to a trip to the cinema or lunch out.

2 Which leads me nicely on to my next tip. If you are planning something in advance see if you can save money by booking your tickets in advance. There are always savings to be made if you know where to look.

3 If you have time then look around for voucher codes to help you save money. This year our sand pit needs replacing. My children still get a lot of use from it and I found this really great site My Favourite Voucher Codes that have a great selection of money off Argos codes, https://www.myfavouritevouchercodes.co.uk/argos-voucher-codes to save us some money. Every penny helps!

4 Playing in the garden. Yes, our garden may be small but it is packed with things to keep the kids busy. They love our homemade mud kitchen, the playhouse, trampoline and our new bug hotel. We can watch the birds at the bird feeders, go on a bug hunt or on a nature scavenger hunt, ‘paint’ the shed with buckets of water, make chalk art on the patio, weed the children’s flower tubs or make another fairy garden – all for free.

5 Visiting free places near home. Now the children are at school it can be difficult to squeeze the things they want to do around the school day or weekend. Going to the play park, taking the bikes out, scooting to the shops rather than driving, visiting the woods and the lido, playing pooh sticks and more. I can’t wait to do all these things with them and create some special memories.

6 We’re members of the National Trust so we will be using our annual membership card to plan day trips. We’ll be making sure to take a picnic and packing the scooters too so we can enjoy the whole day.

I hope I’ve shared some  top tips for saving money during the summer holidays. Have I missed something obvious? Then please feel free to let me know in a comment.
