Once upon a time

there was a little girl who wanted to be an archaeologist. She spent her summers digging with a small trowel in muddy fields and lived and breathed history.

The year this photograph was taken was a very special year. It was 1998 and I spent a couple of weeks on an amazing site on the Isle of Bute before I headed off to Italy for some backpacking and a 2 week stay at the British School in Rome. I had the time of my life. I was studying Ancient History and Archaeology at University and immersed myself in it all.

Fast forward 13 years and although my career isn’t over it’s definitely on hold for a couple of years. I still have my passion for history, visit castles and country houses as often as possible, and look forward to encourage a similar passion in Edward.

  1. Great picture and what an experience! I used to love history, however as you said its not over just on pause!

  2. Wow I bet being an archeologist is amazing and so exciting! History was one of my favourite subjects too x

  3. Lovely post – blissfully peaceful picture. How wonderful that you translated a child’s love of digging in the dirt into a lifelong passion. Edward is a lucky boy, I am sure you will have some grande adventures together.

  4. History was never my favourite subject at school and I blame this on a boring teacher because since I lived in Italy I learnt so much and now love it. Archeaology has always fascinated me too but I’ll leave the digging to you 😀

  5. It sounds like you have a great passion for it so I am sure you will do it again and you will encourage your son to do the same. I don’t really have any huge passions, except maybe photography, but the only problem is I am not very good at it!!

  6. Bless…isn’t it interesting to look back on those days when our lives were so very different! Thank so much for linking up for Flashback Friday! 😉

  7. I am soooooo envious. I always wanted to be an archaeologist when I was at school, until the awful day when I discovered that you needed a good grade on GCSE Chemistry and despite having a research chemist for a dad, it just wasn’t going to happen…
I hope that Edward shares your passion for history as soon as he’s able to!
