Stick Man trail at Wendover Woods

We’re lucky to live in a beautiful part of Greater London surrounded by woods and forests. A short drive away is the outstanding Wendover Woods which is looked after by the Forestry Commission.

Not that we need an incentive to visit the woods, but we do enjoy the partnership between the Forestry Commission, the wonderful books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, to create the fun family activity trails. There have been a couple of trails based on books and so far we’ve visited the Gruffalo Activity Trail, The Gruffalo’s Child Activity Trail and the Superworm Activity Trail.

A few days ago we visited the latest trail, based on the brilliant Stick Man book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler (you can read our review of the special Stick Man gift edition here).

For once the sun was shining, so we packed a picnic and headed out to the woods. It was easy to find the start of the trail and we followed the path, looking out for the characters hanging in the trees.

It was a proper activity trail with lot of ideas of things to do and facts to learn.

The children always enjoy the den building area, played in the dens and added more sticks to them.

There were some lovely touches, including this sweet illustration where you could try rubbing with a crayon and piece of paper.

The length of the trail is about half a mile and took us 45 minutes, which included spending time in the Den Building area.

The Stick Man activity trail at Wendover Woods is open until June 2016. The Stick Man trail is free although you can buy a little Stick Man activity pack from the shop if you wish. No booking is required.

  1. I would love to do one of these with the kids – shame it is so far from us! Be nice to get out in the fresh air as well!

  2. This looks like a great day out in the winter, I love exploring the forestry commision places and this look s a great way to encourage little ones out too. It looks like they really thought through all the different activities and ideas to keep the kids interested the entire way round. That den building area looks like the perfect place to stop and have an adventure. Thanks for linking up with me on Country Kids.

  3. What a fantastic day out and how lovely that it is a Stick Man trial. My tow would love this and we need something like this where we live. It must really encourage the children to get out and exploring which is so important,
