5 minute fortune cookie (for Chinese New Year)

It feels like the New Year has brought lots of crafting opportunities with it and the toddler and I have been busy. Chinese New Year will be celebrated on February 10th, so we’ve made some fabric fortune cookies that look good enough to eat. They were really quick to make, so perfect for a cold afternoon.

Supplies needed to make 5 minute fortune cookies

You will need:

a 4 inch circle (we drew round a can from the kitchen cupboard on a piece of cardboard)

a 5 inch square of felt

a 5 inch square of fabric

a different fortune, handwritten on a piece of paper to slip inside each cookie

How to make a 5 minute fortune cookie for Chinese New Year

Take your cardboard template and cut a circle from both the fabric and felt.

Place the fabric right side up onto the felt circle and sew about half a centimetre inside the edge of the circle, making sure you sew through both pieces of fabric. Don’t forget to insert your fortune before sealing the circle with a couple of backstitches.

Fold your circle in half with the felt on the outside and sew a small row of stitches in the centre leaving a clear space towards both edges.

Unfold either side of your cookie.

And if you’re looking for some ‘fortunes’ to slip inside, how about these:

A smile is your personal welcome mat
An inch of time is an inch of gold
Carve your name on your heart and not on marble
Every flower blooms in its own sweet time
It takes courage to admit fault
Practice makes perfect

Pin for later:

  1. How great is that – we’re going to be trying to make actual fortune cookies this week but yours are loads better 😉 I’ll link to them in my post for people that prefer the prettier option if that’s OK x
