Do you know I first celebrated Thanksgiving in 1995? When I was at University at St Andrews I lived in Halls with lots of International students and was invited to celebrate Thanksgiving with them. We had an amazing meal that evening! Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States, and this year Thanksgiving occurs on Thursday, 22nd November.
In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. In 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
We have a really fun craft to celebrate Thanksgiving today. Celebrate Thanksgiving with simple Pilgrims Hat Cookies which are fun to make and delicious to eat.
Ingredients
Fudge striped cookies
Large marshmallows
Milk chocolate morsels or chocolate flavoured candy coating
Unwrapped Starburst minis
How to make simple Pilgrims Hat Cookies
First prepare a baking sheet with waxed paper or baking parchment.
Melt the chocolate morsels of candy coating according to package directions giving special care not to overheat the candy. If the candy coating is overheated, it will be too thick. You can add 2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening to help thin the candy but do not add any other type of liquid as the candy will seize and harden.
Use a toothpick to carefully dip a marshmallow into the melted chocolate. Tap the toothpick against the bowl to remove excess chocolate.
Immediately pull the toothpick through the centre of the cookie until the marshmallow rests on the cookie.
Carefully remove the toothpick.
Place the cookie on a baking sheet. Immediately press a candy into the chocolate.
Then allow the candy coating to harden before serving.
You can store these in an airtight container at room temperature. Refrain from placing in the refrigerator as this may cause the cookie to soften.
