Zog and the Flying Doctors {a picture book review}

Since my children came along I have enjoyed reading the stories by Julia Donaldson as much as my children have. Yesterday I heard that the latest book to be animated is The Highway Rat and will be screened at Christmas 2017. That feels like quite a long time so I was also pretty pleased to discover a new book had been published by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Theirs is such a winning combination so when I spotted a copy of Zog and the Flying Doctors in the supermarket, I popped it in my trolley.

Zog and the Flying Doctors is the original sequel to the bestselling ZOG (which was published back in 2011).

Meet the Flying Doctors

Their names are Gadabout the Great,
The Flying Doctors soar over the countryside, tending to sunburnt mermaid, a distressed unicorn, and even a sneezy lion. But can they save the King when he falls ill?

As soon as my son saw the cover he reached for it and read it himself. At 6 I thought he might be too old for this kind of story but he loved it. He later read it to his 4 year old sister who enjoyed it too. It’s a great sequel to Zog and a fun story in it’s own right. We all enjoyed the illustrations and soon spotted the hidden Gruffalo – did you know Axel Scheffler hides one in every Julia Donaldson book he illustrates?

When we read the book again yesterday my daughter asked to read all the other books we have by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. She can’t wait to learn to read at school so she can read them herself. But for now she is happy sharing books with me and looking at the pictures.
