How to make Gruffalo cupcakes

Posted on February 5, 2014August 6, 2021 by jenny

We’ve been baking a lot recently. Both my children love the process of baking and making food (and eating the results!) and as their current favourite book is The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson we made Gruffalo cupcakes.

How to make Gruffalo cupcakes

First of all we made a batch of delicious chocolate cupcakes.

When they were cool and covered with a gooey chocolate icing my 3 year old sat at the table with bowls of decorations. We talked about The Gruffalo and what we could use to make his eyes, nose, teeth and everything else.

He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws.

We used flaked almonds, white marshmallows, chocolate buttons and orange and green tic tacs so there was plenty of choice. The toddler loved creating his own mini Gruffalo’s and made each one different. He got quite messy but enjoyed licking his fingers and sampling all the decorations almost as much as he enjoyed decorating the cakes.

Fortunately they weren’t too scary to eat. Little Sis just ate the decorations and icing and handed me back the cake, everyone else enjoyed our Gruffalo cupcakes!

What fun cupcakes! I have always believe that getting kids involved in the cooking process encourages them to eat and try new things! x
